SENSORY DAYS
Sensory Inclusive Play
At the Cayton Children’s Museum, we believe in the benefit of play for all and recognize that play looks different for everyone.
Our monthly Sensory Day events are designed for community organizations that support families with children of diverse abilities and special needs. We also invite families to the museum for custom events that cater to sensory sensitivity and other needs to make the museum a more personable experience for all.
On Thursday, September 21, the Cayton Children’s Museum will host our Sensory Day event from 3 PM–5 PM. During this time, we welcome families and members with children that have sensory sensitivities and disabilities. Reserve your spot today.

About Sensory Days
What is sensory sensitivity?
Sensory sensitivity is an increased sensitivity to and deeper cognitive processing of external stimuli. People with sensory needs have trouble receiving and responding to information that is received by our senses; subtle sounds, lights, crowds, and even smells can be overwhelming and sometimes physically painful. Sensory sensitivity is more common than you might think. According to KultureCity, 1 in 6 people have a sensory need or invisible disability often experienced by individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD, and other similar conditions.
What sensory inclusive accommodations will the Museum offer?
The Cayton already has sensory bags and weighted lap pads readily available—not just on Sensory Days—at the Front Desk. The sensory bags are equipped with noise-cancelling headphones, fidget tools, and verbal cue cards. Should you need any assistance, a Play Guide or any employee can also help you locate them.
What adjustments will be made to the Museum floor?
On Sensory Days, the Cayton will make limited PA announcements and ensure that any music is played softly. There will be designated Quiet Area locations that are easily accessible locations for those who may benefit from a quieter and more secure environment. Quiet areas will be clearly marked with a KultureCity “Quiet Area” sign. For our play friends who use wheelchairs, the Cayton ensures accessibility at the Wishing Wall card area and in the Kevin & Chelsea Washington Art Studio.
What is KultureCity?
KultureCity is the leading nonprofit recognized for revolutionizing and effecting change for those with sensory needs in communities across the country. Since the program’s inception, KultureCity has created more than 550 sensory-inclusive venues and events, including major NFL and MLB events. The Cayton is proud to partner with KultureCity to be certified as a Sensory Inclusive venue.
Will there be special classes or programs on Sensory Days?
We are excited to offer several engaging sensory inclusive activities on Sensory Days.
Is your staff equipped to handle families with children with special needs?
We welcome children of all abilities at the Cayton Children’s Museum and strive to create a welcoming and inclusive play environment. To achieve this, our play guides take part in regular training on inclusion and guiding play. Play Guides and front desk staff are also certified by KultureCity in recognizing and helping guests with sensory needs, as well as handling sensory overload situations.
