  • Cayton Children's Museum | Vision | Los Angeles, California

Our vision is to vastly expand our service and impact to a much broader audience, both in age range & annual visitation and participation, through one-of-a-kind interactive exhibits, innovative programs, and outreach. vision HANDS-ON EXHIBITS INTERACTIVE PROGRAMS COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS IMPACT Our Vision For The Future Of Play HANDS-ON EXHIBITS + INTERACTIVE PROGRAMS + COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS Beginning on our 6th Birthday in Summer 2025, the Cayton Children’s Museum entered a new stage of growth. Our vision is to vastly expand our service and impact to a much broader audience, both in age range & annual visitation and participation, through one-of-a-kind interactive exhibits, innovative programs, and outreach. Hands-On Exhibits Cayton Children’s Museum is reimagining its physical footprint to deliver transformative, playbased learning through fresh, dynamic, and rotating exhibitions. With critical upgrades to our beloved core exhibits and the launch of a new Special Exhibitions Wing, we will present original traveling exhibits and immersive experiences that spark creativity, inquiry, and joy—at home in Santa Monica and across the country. WHERE PLAY TAKES SHAPE DONATE We believe that a space can tell a story—and in the coming year, we plan to craft new environments that speak to children’s boundless potential. Our vision includes introducing fresh exhibit formats that respond to evolving interests, offer more inclusive experiences, and reflect the vibrant diversity of the families we serve. With each installation, we’ll create opportunities not just to play, but to see, feel, and explore the world in new and meaningful ways. With your support , these investments will redefine how our spaces come to life— expanding the ways children learn, explore, and grow in a museum where play truly takes shape. To deepen engagement and elevate the Cayton experience, we’re proposing a multi-pronged investment in new and refreshed exhibit offerings that will expand our reach, revitalize our core, and carry our mission far beyond our museum walls. Special Exhibitions Wing We plan to launch a series of 2–3 rotating traveling exhibits each year, housed in a remodeled Special Exhibitions Wing designed to bring fresh energy and repeat visitation. These temporary installations will offer new content and interactive experiences that keep the museum dynamic for returning families and first-time guests alike. Core Exhibit Upgrades After nearly 700,000 visits since opening in 2019, our core exhibit spaces—spanning 22,000 square feet—are in need of essential repairs, enhancements, and technology upgrades. These updates will ensure our permanent offerings continue to deliver safe, stimulating, and inclusive play for the next generation of Cayton visitors. Touring Exhibits Looking outward, we aim to design new themed and sponsored traveling exhibits, original to the Cayton, that can be shared nationally with peer institutions. These mobile experiences will bring the Cayton’s unique approach to hands-on, values-based learning to children’s museums, libraries, and science centers across the country. Interactive Programs Designed to meet real educational needs while nurturing imagination, our programs will elevate the museum as a trusted learning hub and cultural destination for children and their grown-ups. Through original theatre productions, maker workshops, artist residencies, and school collaborations, Cayton’s interactive programs will deepen engagement with families, students, and educators alike. PLAY WITH PURPOSE DONATE In the year ahead, we aim to introduce a robust lineup of innovative programs that invite children to dive deeper—into stories, materials, ideas, and collaboration. From live performances and creative residencies, to drop-in experiences and field trips that align with real classroom learning, these initiatives will blur the line between education and inspiration. Designed with intention, each program will offer children and caregivers new ways to learn, engage, and grow together. With your support, we can broaden our reach and deepen our impact—bringing purposeful play to more children and families through highquality programs across our communities. To expand our educational impact and enrich the experiences we offer, we propose a series of innovative programs designed to engage children, families, educators, and caregivers through creativity, collaboration, and values-based learning. Theatre Programming We envision launching a slate of original children’s theatre productions inspired by beloved books and stories—bringing literature to life on stage and sparking imagination through live performance. These productions will serve as joyful entry points into language, empathy, and storytelling for young audiences. School Partnerships To deepen our educational relevance, we will develop and facilitate field trips for schools and camps in partnership with local districts and independent educators. These visits will be intentionally aligned with learning standards and designed to support classroom goals while providing enriching, outof-school experiences for students. Creative Workshops Through artist residencies, maker workshops, and creative “takeovers” of the Cayton’s Art Studio, we will offer children hands-on opportunities to experiment, build, and express themselves in ever-evolving ways. These experiences will nurture creativity, confidence, and collaboration while reflecting the voices of working artists in our community. Visitor Programming We also plan to expand our calendar of drop-in activities and signature weekend events—offering consistent, high-quality engagement for both members and first-time visitors. These programs will invite families into playful, themed experiences that evolve with the seasons and highlight diverse cultures, topics, and traditions. Learning Institute We will continue to build on the work of the Cayton Learning Institute—expanding offerings for educators, caregivers, and researchers supporting child development. Through teacher training, university partnerships, and parent workshops, we aim to strengthen our role as a hub for learning, leadership, and innovation in early childhood education. Community Connections With a new mobile vehicle fleet and deeper community partnerships, the Cayton will bring the Power of Play into neighborhoods across Santa Monica and broader Los Angeles. From festivals and schools to pop-ups and playgrounds, we will reach children and families where they are—removing barriers to access, strengthening local connections, and expanding our impact far beyond museum walls. TOGETHER THROUGH PLAY DONATE Connection happens when families feel seen, included, and invited in—and through our expanded community outreach, we intend to meet more families where they are. With mobile exhibits and on-the-go programming, we’ll bring the Cayton experience into neighborhoods across Santa Monica and broader Los Angeles, collaborating with schools, local partners, and public spaces to create joyful moments of discovery and connection— right in the heart of each community. With your support, we can create more opportunities for families to come together through play—fostering connection, curiosity, and belonging across the communities we serve. To bring the Cayton experience beyond our walls and into the heart of Santa Monica and broader Los Angeles communities, we propose a mobile initiative and expanded partnership strategy designed to eliminate barriers and foster deeper, place-based engagement. Outreach Fleet We plan to launch a branded mini-fleet of three vehicles equipped to deliver portable exhibits and hands-on programming to diverse community settings. These mobile activations will allow us to appear at festivals, farmers markets, and public events throughout the year—bringing joyful, valuesbased play to families in welcoming, everyday environments. The same fleet will also support in-school programming, with facilitated workshops tailored to classrooms, cafeterias, and playgrounds—offering children meaningful learning experiences where they already live and learn. Pop-Up Events In addition, we will collaborate with mission-aligned organizations across Los Angeles to co-create pop-up exhibits and shared programs. These temporary activations will allow the Cayton to partner deeply with trusted community institutions— expanding our reach, amplifying collective impact, and ensuring that every family has a chance to experience the power of play, right in their own neighborhood. IMPACT. Impact at the Cayton isn’t just measured in attendance—it’s measured in access, relevance, and transformation. As we look ahead, we’re focused on deepening our educational value, broadening who we serve, and strengthening our role in the community. The following goals represent the impact we’re working toward—driven by our mission, shaped by our families, and guided by a bold new vision for what a children’s museum can be. A VISION WITH NEW LEADERSHIP DONATE This bold vision for impact is being realized under the leadership of the Cayton’s new CEO, Thomas Sullivan, who joined the museum following a six-month national search. Thomas brings over two decades of experience in museum leadership, exhibit development, and early childhood education. From rebuilding the Westchester Children’s Museum post-pandemic to leading teams at DuPage Children’s Museum and designing learning experiences for institutions like the Liberty Science Center and the American Museum of Natural History, Thomas has dedicated his career to advancing playful, purposeful learning. With a Master’s in Museum Education from Bank Street College and teaching credentials from the Erikson Institute, Thomas combines hands-on expertise with a deep academic foundation. Now a Santa Monica resident with his wife and two children, Thomas is guiding the Cayton into its next chapter—rooted in access, innovation, and a belief in the academic and intellectual power of play. Thomas Sullivan CEO 424-416-8387 tsullivan@caytonmuseum.org Increased Age Range The Cayton is expanding its reach to serve children from the very beginning of life through early adolescence. By designing programs and experiences that support infants, toddlers, and tweens, we will provide families with a continuous, developmentally appropriate space for growth, learning, and connection from prenatal stages through middle school. Expanded Community Awareness Through increased partnerships with school districts, city and county agencies, and fellow nonprofits, the Cayton will strengthen its presence as a civic partner and cultural resource. These efforts will not only amplify our visibility but help us stay responsive to the evolving needs of Los Angeles families and communities. Elevated Experiences for Members and Visitors We are investing in hands-on, immersive exhibits and dynamic visitor programming that can’t be found anywhere else in the region. By creating innovative, everevolving experiences, we will invite repeat visits, deepen engagement, and reaffirm the Cayton’s reputation as a oneof-a-kind learning environment. Access for All We are committed to eliminating barriers that prevent families from fully engaging with the Cayton. Whether addressing physical or cognitive needs, financial constraints, or language and cultural gaps, our goal is to create an inclusive museum where every family feels welcomed, represented, and supported. Deeper Educational Content and Credibility We are deepening the educational value of every exhibit and program to ensure families see the Cayton as a trusted resource for early childhood and elementary learning. The Cayton will be entitled to recover their court costs and reasonable attorneys’ fees and expenses incurred in successfully proving any breach or violation of any term of these Terms. Arbitration PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING SECTION CAREFULLY. IT REQUIRES YOU TO ARBITRATE DISPUTES WITH THE CAYTON AND LIMITS THE MANNER IN WHICH YOU CAN SEEK RELIEF. Any and all disputes, claims or controversies (together, “Claims”) arising out of or relating to these Terms shall be settled by binding arbitration in accordance with American Arbitration Association (“AAA”) governing rules and procedures, including the Supplementary Procedures for Consumer-Related Disputes, where applicable. In agreeing to arbitrate all Claims, you and the Cayton waive all rights to a trial by jury in any action or proceeding involving any Claim. The parties agree that an award and any judgment confirming it only applies to the arbitration in which it was awarded and cannot be used in any other case except to enforce the award itself. This agreement to arbitrate shall apply, without limitation, to all claims that arose or were asserted before the Effective Date of this agreement to arbitrate and shall survive termination of your relationship with the Cayton. The arbitrator shall have exclusive authority to resolve any dispute relating to the interpretation, applicability, enforceability or formation of these Terms including, but not limited to any claim that all or any part of this agreement to arbitrate is void or voidable. All disputes regarding the payment of arbitrator or arbitration-organization fees including the timing of such payments and remedies for nonpayment, shall be determined exclusively by an arbitrator, and not by any court. The arbitrator will decide the rights and liabilities, if any, of you and the Cayton. The arbitrator will have the authority to grant motions dispositive of all or part of any claim or dispute. Subject to the limitations set forth below in this Section, the arbitrator shall have authority to award legal and equitable relief on an individual basis that a judge in a court of law would have, provided that: The arbitrator shall not have authority to award punitive damages unless authorized to do so by statute; and Any and all claims shall be arbitrated on an individual basis only and shall not be consolidated or joined with or in any arbitration or other proceeding involving a Claim of any other party. You and the Cayton agree that the arbitrator shall have no authority to arbitrate any Claim as a class action or in any other form other than on an individual basis. The award shall be binding only among the parties and shall have no preclusive effect in any other arbitration or other proceeding involving a different party. The arbitrator shall follow the applicable law. The arbitrator’s decision is final and binding on you and the Cayton. YOU AND THE CAYTON AGREE TO WAIVE ANY RIGHT TO RESOLVE CLAIMS WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THESE TERMS ON A CLASS, COLLECTIVE, OR REPRESENTATIVE BASIS. ALL CLAIMS AND DISPUTES WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THESE TERMS MUST BE ARBITRATED ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS AND NOT ON A CLASS OR COLLECTIVE BASIS. CLAIMS OF MORE THAN ONE CUSTOMER OR USER CANNOT BE ARBITRATED OR LITIGATED JOINTLY OR CONSOLIDATED WITH THOSE OF ANY OTHER CUSTOMER OR USER. If, however, this waiver of class or consolidated actions is deemed invalid or unenforceable with respect to a particular claim or dispute, neither you nor the Cayton is entitled to arbitration of such claim or dispute. Instead, all such claims and disputes will then be resolved in a court as set forth in the “Governing Law” Section. This provision does not prevent you or the Cayton from participating in a class-wide settlement of claims. To the maximum extent permitted by law, you permanently and irrevocably waive the right to bring any Claim in any forum unless you provide the Cayton with written notice of the event or facts giving rise to the Claim within one (1) year of their occurrence, which should be provided in the manner outlined under the “Notice” Section. Notwithstanding any provision in these Terms to the contrary, we agree that if the Cayton makes any future material change to this agreement to arbitrate, it will not apply to any individual claim(s) that you had already provided notice of to the Cayton. Notice The Cayton may give notice to users of the Website by means of a general notice on the Website, electronic mail to a user’s email address if on record, or by written communication sent by first class mail to a user’s address if on record. You may give notice to the Cayton (such notice shall be deemed given when received) by any of the following means: Electronic mail: info@caytonmuseum.org Letter delivered by first class postage prepaid mail or courier to the Cayton at the following address: Cayton Children’s Museum 395 Santa Monica Place, Suite 374, Santa Monica, CA, 90401 United States Indemnification You hereby agree to indemnify and hold the Cayton and each of its respective members, operators, directors, officers, employees, shareholders, agents, affiliates, and representatives harmless from all claims, liabilities, damages, and expenses (including attorneys’ fees and court costs) arising out of or relating to: (i) your use of the Website; (ii) any content submitted by you ; (iii) any breach or alleged breach of these Terms; (iv) your violation of any applicable law, statute, ordinance, regulation, or of any third party’s rights; and (v) claims asserted by third parties that, if proven, would place you in breach of representations, warranties, covenants, or other provisions in these Terms. The Cayton may, in its sole and absolute discretion, control the disposition of any claim (and the selection of counsel) at your sole cost and expense. Without limiting the foregoing, you may not settle, compromise, or in any other manner dispose of any claim without the consent of the Cayton. Severability If any provision of these Terms is held to be unenforceable or invalid, such provision will be changed and interpreted to accomplish the objectives of such provision to the greatest extent possible under applicable law and the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect. Waiver Except as provided herein, the failure to exercise a right or to require performance of an obligation under these Terms shall not effect a party's ability to exercise such right or require such performance at any time thereafter nor shall be the waiver of a breach constitute a waiver of any subsequent breach. Miscellaneous These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy and Cayton visitor agreements , constitute the entire agreement between you and the Cayton and supersede all prior and contemporaneous written or oral agreements, proposals or communications with respect to the subject matter herein between you and the Cayton. In the event that the Cayton is acquired by or merges with a third party entity, we reserve the right, in any of these circumstances, to transfer or assign the information we have collected from our users as part of such merger, acquisition, sale, or other change of control. In the event of our bankruptcy, insolvency, reorganization, receivership, or assignment for the benefit of creditors, or the application of laws, or equitably principles affecting creditors’ rights generally, we may not be able to control how your personal information is treated, transferred, or used. Our failure or delay to exercise, in any way, any right herein shall not be deemed a waiver of any further rights hereunder. Except as specified in these Terms, the Cayton’s support staff or other employees do not have the authority to amend any of this Terms or to bind the Cayton to any legal or other obligation not already set forth in this Terms. Force Majeure The Cayton will not be liable for failing to perform under these Terms by the occurrence of any event beyond its reasonable control, including, without limitation, a labor disturbance, an internet outage or interruption of service, a communications outage, failure by a service provider to the Cayton to perform, fire, terrorism, natural disaster, pandemic, or war. Changes to These Terms We reserve the right, at our sole discretion, to modify or replace these Terms at any time. If a revision is material, we will make reasonable efforts to provide at least 30 days' notice prior to any new terms taking effect. Teachers can also choose from a variety of lesson plans so you can tailor the experience to your students’ needs. Availablity Our field trip program is currently full for the 2024–2025 school year. Using all-natural powders, children will concoct their own scented paints that they'll then use to create colorful masterpieces that make scents. KEEPING IN TOUCH | grades K–3 (Tactile) Unlike other museums, we encourage exploration through touch! Using different materials with a variety of textures, children will build their own engaging sensory boards and use adjectives to explain how the individual components feel. HEAR COMES THE SOUND | grades K–3 (Auditory) This is a welcome opportunity for students to sound off on listening. Meeting at the intersection of art and music, children are captivated as they draw how an array of nature sounds and different genres of music make them feel. SEEING YOUR TRUE COLORS | grades 1–3 (Visual) Students get to make a hue-ge splash with visually stimulating sensory bottles. Using vivid primary hues, children will identify both primary and secondary colors as they mix them in bottles. They'll also employ different tools like glowsticks and mini flashlights to explore the full spectrum of colors. WE LIKE TO MOVE IT, MOVE IT | grades K–3 (Proprioception/Vestibular) Here’s one for the movers and shakers! Students will focus on the different ways their bodies respond to activities that utilize a wide range of motion. From gentle yoga to an exhilarating obstacle course, children love to shake things up during this field trip. ABOUT Sensory Field Trips Fine Print Actual field trip schedules may vary depending on the arrival of groups. Los Angeles traffic is unpredictable!
